The History of Sweetened Condensed Milk

The idea of making sweetened condensed milk stems from the problem of European society in ancient times where they could not keep their milk long so it went stale quickly. Because in the past there was no refrigeration machine to store fresh milk, fresh milk that is not drunk immediately will quickly change in taste and cannot be consumed anymore.

Around 1854, Gail Borden had the idea to create a long-lasting dairy innovation. To make milk last longer, it needs to be heated so that it can kill germs and bacteria that cause milk to go stale. In addition, milk also needs to be added sugar. This step is to inhibit the growth of bacteria in the milk to make the milk last longer.

Due to the process of evaporation and the addition of sugar, the texture of the milk becomes thick, so it has the name we know today, sweetened condensed milk. Finally in 1856 Borden patented this sweetened condensed milk product. Sweetened condensed milk is widely liked by the public because it is durable and affordable, and in 1922, sweetened condensed milk was imported to Indonesia
for the first time.
